Sitting in the newsroom on a Saturday night, bored out of my brain... listening to lots of interesting and often unspeakable events on the police scanner. Quiet news days are the worst. Not only are you bored, there's also the nagging fear that you're missing the biggest news story in the world. And then I remember this is Perth.
It's certainly been a big news week internationally. The Live 8 campaign and the meeting of G8 leaders in Scotland, contrasted with the terror attacks on London. It's times like this that true international networks like CNN and BBC World come into their own, with amazing wall-to-wall coverage.
In Scotland though, leaders of the G8 industrialised nations have unveiled a plan to increase aid to Africa, provide universal access to Aids treatment and forgive debt for the poorest African nations. Campaigners like Bono and Bob Geldof have vowed to watch them like hawks to ensure they make good on their promises. I've been impressed they've managed to get their message through in the face of the London bombings coverage, which has dominated news bulletins everywhere.

Do you think rock stars like Bono and Bob Geldof really make a difference? Is poverty something we can eliminate, or will we always live with? Any difference we're going to make needs to start with us, one by one we need to act, and that's the motive behind the "One" campaign in the United States.
I kicked $10 in for some wrist bands. Doing my bit, but it means I've got nine to give away. Let me know if you want one... or don't be cheap and buy some yourself! We all need to fight this thing together. Don't dream about one day changing the world, do what you can now to make a difference.
