I am the kind of person who likes science. I like to know how things work. I've noticed that there are a few scientific theories around which are looked down upon by the Christian culture. It is like one of the Hot Potatoes that Phil does at Riverview. People say that these particular theories are evil and only look at one side of the story.
The theories that I am talking about are the Big bang and the Evolution theory. People don't know what is behind the theory, only the mutated versions which they hear from people. We then accept these as fact. Being the guy that I am, I took some background on them and I was surprised at how different they were from what people said.
The common belief about the big bang theory is that it says that the universe was just a big ball of matter which exploded for no reason one day around 13.7 (give or take .2)billion years ago. This somehow implied that God doesn't exist so it was put down by the religious communities.
What most people don't know is that the theory originated from a Catholic priest named Georges LemaƮtre. He came up with the theory and Edwin Hubble gave the observations to say that it was plausible. The theory merely states that the universe began at a certain point in time. I personally don't see how this implies that God doesn't exist.
The second theory is evolution. Once again this is just a misunderstanding. The theory of evolution is stating that a change in DNA has caused species change over time. Very similar to the survival of the fittest. It is saying that we have changed to become a better biologically. The theory that we came from a bunch of monkeys who changed over however many years is a possibility but because of a lack of evidence there must be a conspiracy (reference to earlier post). Not really. It is plausible but due to lack of evidence, chances are that that is not what happened.
Neither of these theories says anything which suggests that God doesn't exist and that we are just a product of random chance. So people who believe that everything is coincidental, I am going to ask 1 question. If everything is random, Why do things repeat themselves throughout the universe e.g., Fibonacci, triangles, the golden ratio.
Anyway, I am curious as to what people think about these matters so tell me if you feel like it

good point, you're right, it's not saying God doesn't exist, i guess what it is doing it taking away from what God said happened in Genesis, where he created the heavens and earth in a few days, not billions, and made man and women from the dirt, not monkeys.
ow, my brain!
on the big bang, it merely describes the process under which the universe was created, it doesn't rule out the possibility of someone pulling the trigger. (the nature of that trigger, be it gravity, critical mass, black holes etc, is another debate all together).
on evolution, there is more faith required to believe in evolution than to beleive in christ. that said, as a qualified geologist and having done more than my share of time in the paleontology lab, i am convinced of an old earth, or an earth that was created to look old. I have seen the iridium rich cretaceous/tertiary boundary in the Waipara Valley of NZ signifying a mass extinction, have pulled dinosaur fossils out of rocks, have handled trilobites from Devonian rocks in Reefton NZ, and have viewed many other geological wonders in different parts of the world. this earth certainly looks old (no, the flood was not solely responsible for all of it, if any), but maybe that's just how God made it to keep us all guessing. It wouldn't be any fun if it was all handed to us on a plate.
Fibonacci, golden ratios, string theory, atoms, molecules, etc just prove an intelligent designer - something that we knew all along.
One thing i know is that i've seen christians turn themselves inside out over this stuff. in actual fact it doesn't really matter, noone has ever been argued into the kingdom of heaven, and at the end of the day it is the holy spirit who meets with you and changes you, not science.
hey tony
I would like to honor your topic. yes i have finally read it and here's my answer.
Where I come from, I 've got this discussion sooooooo many times cause france is a really full on non christian country. In some ways, It's helps me to be more aware about more things and not think or give answers in a 'black and white'way.
the notion of 'coincidental 'is really hard because as a christian , we will have the tendancy to relate most of things that happens in our life to GOD.'everything happen for a reason' . But the funny thing is that some of my non christians friends think there is no coincidental but they don't believe in GOD... interesting hey!!!
Hard really.....
Great post there young Azza. Your becoming quite an intellectually minded young man, very good to see.
And your right on the spot about the theories. The truth is, they are just theories... and definately do mean different things to what most people seem to think they do.. There are actually alot of really naive people in the world. It's a good idea to get used to it as quick as possible and not judge them for it.
I think alot of people simply use the theories as an excuse....a scapegoat if you like... to avoid bringing God into the equation.
I guess people always have a fear and a desire to reject that of which they cannot understand.
Regarding Evolution, there is really no evidence to suggest that species have changed into another species over time.
There is plenty of evidence of different species evolving amongst themselves.. eg. Birds growing longer toes, dogs getting sharper and skinnier paws, certain sea creatures growing tales and changing in shape slightly..stuff like that.
However there is no evidence to suggest that a Cat evolved into a Dog, or that any animal descened from a totally seperate animal. This is what makes the idea that Man descened from Ape basically impossible.
Sure, Humans have evolved in certain ways, but we have always been Human. We never have been and never will be on the verge of turning into a Dolphin or a giraffe.
I just love reading the story in Genesis that God made us all unique and we are his master CREATION. And that we rule over all mammals on the land and fish in the sea. We were brilliantly created and designed in his likeness with Intelligence...
Our ability to think and communicate in so many different ways is proof in itself that there was a designer involved.
Anyway, keep up the good posts Az man, your already my favourite poster on this blog.. keep it up mate, and i'll see you on film crew sometime soon.
