Holy Ghost Wiener Roast

Today is Halloween in USA and apparently there's some Australians that know what this festival is about... and A LOT that don't get it at all! After all it's an American festival what the heck are we even celebrating here for!?? There's nothing Aussie about it except that the obscuring of it has seemed to bring out the rouge in the already naughty young Australians.

Last night at my friends house, we had a few kids in goblin masks knock on the door for trick or treat. Unprepared, we gave them a few gold coins like it was the Red Shield appeal. They were having a ball and I was reminded of when we went Trick-or-treating as a kid. It would have an even better time for these kids if it was an Aussie fest... but we're not in Kansas Toto!! Shame!

As I drove away a bunch of naughty kids were running-a-muck on a construction area in very average 'costumes'... I think they were trying to be rap stars. Lame effort! Those kids didn't get it.

And then there are some not-so-anal American Christian's with a little sass and willingness to celebrate a time honored festival, when the rest of the Religious Right have boycotted the season completely. They re-label it things like the 'Holy Ghost Wiener roast' to try and get in on the fun. Fair enough I reckon - have a bit of fun in the name of tradition and bring it back to Jesus! Even if it originated as a pagan festival, memories that can be made for a kid during festivals such as these are priceless! My parents were in bible college and still let us trick or treat. It's not like cultish acts followed the rituals of candy getting. Obviously it's got nothing on the importance of Christmas or Easter.

Ranting aside - thought I'd share with you my memories of Halloween. Carving jack-o-lanterns and trick of treating with our favourite baby-sitters dressed as Snow White. Not sure I'd let my kids (that's right- didn't you know I have 3 of them) trick or treat in this day and age of candy lacing pedophiles etc. which may make me a hypocrite but in the early 80's is was SPOOKTACULAR!! Happy Halloween to all my USA friends. God bless you!

well technically speaking..its not just a US celebration. Halloween in fact has its roots in scotland/ireland something or rather. and with most crazy commercial celebrations nowadays, also started as a pagan festival re fertility.. but anyway. thats my two bobs. and the canadians at my firm ..closest relatives to the americans ahahaha. .. came round with candy to give out .. how nice. and how scrumptous. ooooo wow. its november!

Considering the christmas tree originates from some pagan tree festival that was assimilated by the chirstians to weed out those pesky heathens, and I'm sure eggs don't represent new life at easter (more a chocolate shell around nothing much at all) I'm sure in 200 years halloween will have been through the religious cycle and have become some meaningless commercial sale.

So notch up another one: the pagan tree festival, the pagan chocolate festival and now the pagan pumpkin festival.

That's it from cynical me... for now.
